VERGE

The most rewarding feeling is watching an idea come to life. In June of 2022, I embarked on a journey to create an editorial fashion and lifestyle magazine for my university, and with the support of my three co-founders, I launched VERGE Magazine as Editor-in-Chief. Believing in the luck of the number five, I was thrilled to publish five outstanding issues in a single academic year, each filled with over 140 pages of gratitude that taught me invaluable lessons. The magazine has since grown to have over 1,100 followers and a vibrant community of support and business.

JOURNALISM

WRITING & REFINING

Stories, Interviews, and Self-Writting

As Editor-in-chief, I immersed myself in the creative and collaborative process of curating and refining each issue. One of the most exhilarating parts of the role was creating segments for upcoming issues. These began with dynamic brainstorming sessions with the entire staff, where ideas flowed freely. I loved fostering an environment where everyone felt empowered to pitch concepts, no matter how bold or unconventional. Once the brainstorming concluded, I would refine these raw ideas, solidifying the themes and plans to ensure they were feasible and compelling, ready to be brought to life.

With a clear direction in place, I would distribute writing assignments tailored to each writer’s unique style and strengths. Articles were then reviewed by my Journalism Editor, who ensured the content was polished and aligned with the magazine's tone. Once the pieces came to me, I meticulously reviewed and edited them, ensuring the writing was not only technically flawless but also evocative and engaging.

After my final adjustments, the articles moved to my Graphic Design Editor, who oversaw their transformation into visually stunning spreads. polished and aligned with the magazine's tone. Creating Graphic Design Layouts and Editing

CRAFTING THE CANVAS

As the layouts came together, my Assistant Editor carefully combed through every page, providing another layer of scrutiny. Finally, I would undertake a comprehensive revision of all layouts, making final tweaks to ensure the visual and written content worked seamlessly together. This intricate process, though challenging, was deeply rewarding—each issue was a testament to our collective creativity, attention to detail, and dedication to producing something extraordinary. Through VERGE, I honed my leadership, editorial, and creative skills while fostering a collaborative spirit that I believe brought out the best in our team.

LETTER from the

EDITOR

Interview done by Jill Harrington

March 2023

Being recognized by a CMU student for her class project highlighting powerful female voices on campus was a significant experience. During the interview, I reflected on the magazine I created, its impact, and my vision for its future. The student chose to interview me because of the influence of my work, and I felt honored to be part of her project. Most of the conversation focused on my "Letter from the Editor" segments, where I share personal insights, set the tone for each issue, and connect directly with readers. These letters hold deep significance, encapsulating the magazine's mission and values. I felt proud knowing I had built a platform where all students, regardless of background, felt welcomed and encouraged to contribute to something larger than themselves.

PHOTOSHOOTS

Directing, Styling, Editing, and Modeling

In the early days of VERGE, being hands-on during photoshoots was a crucial part of my role as editor-in-chief, especially since we had a small team and limited resources. Up until the fourth and fifth issues, I directed about 80% of our shoots, which meant wearing many hats to ensure every detail was executed flawlessly. I styled models, and selected wardrobe and makeup looks, often sourcing items from my personal collection or contributions from my e-board since our budget was tight in the beginning.

Directing the shoots involved coordinating schedules, scouting locations, and collaborating with photographers and models to bring our creative vision to life. I joined nearly every photoshoot, guiding the models and photographers to ensure the shots aligned with our editorial goals. Occasionally, I would also step in front of the camera and model for various features in each issue.

These photoshoots were not just about capturing images—they were moments where the energy and passion of our small team came together, turning limited resources into bold, impactful visuals. Those early challenges taught me the value of adaptability, creativity, and teamwork, and they remain some of my favorite memories from building VERGE into what it became.
